President Volodymyr Zelensky seems to have left a White House meeting empty-handed after failing to obtain the sought-after Tomahawk cruise missiles from President Donald Trump.

The Ukrainian president stated after the cordial bilateral that both leaders had talked about long-range missiles, but decided not to make statements on that topic "since the United States does not want an escalation."

President Trump's Position on Weapons Transfer

While the US president did not rule out supplying the missiles to Ukraine, his approach during the White House meeting was non-committal.

"Hopefully Ukraine won't require them, ideally we'll be able to end the conflict without thinking about Tomahawks," Trump stated, adding that America required the missile systems for its own defense.

The American leader acknowledged that sending the missiles would be "an escalation, but we'll be talking about it."

International Diplomatic Moves

This high-level meeting came just a day after Trump held telephone discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and agreed to hold face-to-face talks in Hungary soon.

Following the discussions, Trump used social media to urge Kyiv and Russia to "cease current positions" and conclude the conflict.

Ukrainian Perspective and Proposals

The Ukrainian leader proposed that his country could provide unmanned aerial vehicles in exchange for the missile systems, a proposal that elicited smiles and nodding from the American president.

The Ukrainian president also complimented Trump on his role in securing a peace deal in the Middle East, implying that the US leader could capitalize on that success to help resolve Russia's war in his country.

Upcoming Talks and Considerations

When asked about whether the possibility of Ukrainian forces having Tomahawks had influenced the Russian president to agree to meet the US leader, the Ukrainian president answered, "I don't know," noting that the idea had caused Russia to be "afraid since it is a powerful military asset."

When questioned if he was leaving Washington more optimistic that Ukraine would receive the missiles, he stated, "My approach is realistic."

Zelensky maintains that using these missiles to target Russian oil and energy facilities would severely weaken Russia's military funding capabilities.

"Truth and democracy will win, and all the violence and aggression will disappear," stated one Ukrainian store owner. "We simply wish to exist peacefully, we don't want to give up, we only desire to be left in peace."
