When an teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial European match against City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.

During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, every day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated the player following his debut.

"I've just achieved my dream with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to have a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the option to play for either country at senior international level.

According to international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they play in a competitive senior international match.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club pursue trophies to come.

Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my playing time on the field," he said after the win at Manchester.
