UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman containing several human souls within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate personas, all possessing unique fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes show the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
A World of Personal Horror
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core mechanic involves managing the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms growing from their necks are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
