Our team is verifying video footage and photographs posted earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site of where the images were from relied on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the footage were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
