In a significant move for their retooling roster, the Chicago White Sox have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract with the accomplished player.

Financial Terms and Incentives

The agreement features a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to salaries of $16M for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the final year.

Importantly, Murakami's compensation can increase based on performance achievements in 2026:

• $1 million for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
• $500,000 for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
• $250,000 for placing fourth through 10th.
• $250,000 for being named the top rookie honor.

His deal includes that he will not be optioned to the farm system without his permission and makes him a free agent at the termination of the deal. Additional perks include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between Japan and the U.S..

Transfer Payment and Franchise History

As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization would also receive a additional payment of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth player from Japan to suit up for the South Siders, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami during their time in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who turns 26 in February, joins a promising lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a 60-102 season, placing at the bottom in the American League Central but showing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.

The winner of back-to-back league MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is renowned for a record-breaking 2022 season where he belted 56 home runs, eclipsing the single-season record for a Japanese-born player formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to secure Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Despite fanning 64 Ks, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 RBIs.

Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 Ks in 892 games. He started playing primarily at first base, he has more recently played to third base.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's big-game performance were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off double that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic 6-5 win. The following day in the final against the USA, he slugged a tying shot in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's eventual championship win.
