The Golden State is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Time in 25 Years.

Following 25 long years, every region of the state is experiencing dryness. This landmark event follows grueling years marked by below-average rain that exacerbated fire dangers and pressured its huge agribusiness.

An Update Shows Zero Abnormally Dry Areas

The latest assessment from the national drought tracker confirmed that the entire state is clear of any level of drought. This development was driven by weeks of above-normal rainfall that helped fill major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville well above their historic averages.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” stated a climate scientist.

After Severe Systems to Wet Holidays

The path to this point included powerful and fatal winter storms that battered the state in 2023, leading to significant overflow, blackouts, and fatalities. Even though those events helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.

Until late December, pockets like Modoc County were considered experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the start of the new year finally erased those final dry conditions.

A Crucial Snowpack Remains a Concern

Yet, authorities caution that the end of drought status does not mean having no water worries. Current readings of the Sierra Nevada snowpack indicate it is only about 70% of the average for this date.

This snowpack, which supplies a significant portion of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for the year ahead. Water officials have emphasized that it is not yet time to draw conclusions for the months ahead.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” said a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re closer to average.”

While the drought map is entirely green, attention turns to maintaining this hard-won hydrological health throughout the rest of the year.
