Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events before the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with five in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
