Far-Right Former Congressman J.A. Kast Elected as Chile's New President.
Following a conclusive runoff election, far-right politician José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Win
After more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been beaten by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Campaign Focused On Law and Order and Migration
Noted for his strong socially conservative views and regard for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was primarily focused on promises to tackle increasing insecurity and radically restrict immigration.
He consistently cited foreigners, notably the roughly 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the race, he gave an ultimatum for them to leave before the inauguration or face deportation.
His proposals featured U.S.-style measures such as constructing detention centers, barriers, electric fences, and bolstering the armed forces presence on the northernmost frontier.
Amid a Broader Wave
Numerous observers view Kast's victory as fitting into a broader right-wing shift in South America, coming after this year's electoral outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other pundits also frame it as a continuation of the predictable swing of power between left-wing and right governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Ruling Without a Clear Majority
In spite of his decisive popular vote triumph, Kast will not command an absolute majority in parliament, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if all rightwing parties are grouped together.
This legislative reality may hinder his agenda, including a promise to cut public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a plan for which he has yet to detailed concrete steps.
"There are many questions about how a Kast government will operate that we don't know because he has not detailed his methods for do them," said a political science analyst.
The analyst added, "Regarding fiscal matters, it is highly probable we will see austerity policies common for the right-wing. But where there is far less ambiguity is on law and order, because that has been his workhorse during the race."
